Earth Matter Peru Soap Plan: Chacra, Leche de Chupaca and Reserva Mantaro
Version 7, 25 October 2026. Three lines (economical, milk and premium, with the 55 g Sol y Luna bar) and hotel guest bars, two wire cutters, shaped molds for the premium and guest bars, re-costed with the Oliva Divina prices and the new essential oils.
🆕 What changed in versions 6 and 7
- Version 7 also adds a Chacra Charcoal & Rosemary bar and a tasting box of six 25 g bars (S/ 22), and logs Natura and EsaCare prices in the competition table and the spreadsheet.
- Version 7: Reserva Sol y Luna. A 55 g round bar from sun-and-moon molds on the same three Reserva bases, sold in sets of three, to boutique hotels and as event favors, at S/ 12 a bar or S/ 30 for a set.
- Three lines and hotel bars instead of four lines. Suave and Leche de Chupaca are merged into one milk line, Leche de Chupaca, on the milder Suave base with 2/3 raw cow milk and 1/3 goat milk. The sunflower base is retired.
- The Vegetal line is replaced by Reserva Mantaro, a premium line for gifts, hotels and Lima shops: 100 g oval flower bars in a kraft box at S/ 22. One bar, Eucalipto Spa, stays animal-free.
- Hotel guest bars in two sizes: 14 g minis from silicone trays and 25 g bars cut from a divided wood box on the 2 cm cutter.
- Two cutters and a molds register: cutter 1 at 2 cm (Chacra, guest bars), a second cutter at 1″ (Leche de Chupaca), both with 0.011″ steel guitar strings; the oval flower and rectangle molds you ordered; the mini trays to buy.
- Kept from version 5: the price and scent registers, avocado out of the bases, and the evaluation of the proposed bioextract formulations.
🧼 How soap fits the farm plan
Soap turns part of the lavender rows at Toccha Comun II, the farm's calendula, kale, tomato seconds and eucalyptus leaves into shelf-stable products that sell at the same stalls as the vegetables, flowers, tincture and candles. It is made at the Chupaca base, not at the plot.
- Three lines and hotel bars: neighbors who want a good bar at close to a supermarket price, buyers who want a mild bar made with local milk, gift buyers and Lima shops (with one animal-free bar), and hotels.
- Year one reality: newly planted lavender yields little at first, so the first batches use bought dried lavender and the imported oil.
- Same rule as the tincture and candles: no health or therapeutic claims on labels, signs, social media or at the stall. Say what the soap is made of and how it feels, not what it treats.
- Same values as the farm: plastic-free packaging, local inputs first and a true story: grown and made by hand in the Mantaro Valley.

Hotel bar prices are per bar to the hotel.
- Chacra (economical): lard 70%, coconut 25%, castor 5%. A hard, white, long-lasting bar from the cheapest fat in the valley, cut at 2 cm for an 80 g bar at S/ 5 (3 for S/ 13). Plain kraft band. The scrub sits with this line and is now poured in rectangle molds.
- Chacra Charcoal & Rosemary: the Chacra base with 1% cosmetic activated charcoal (bamboo or coconut, never barbecue charcoal) for a grey bar, scented with tea tree, rosemary and cedarwood. Charcoal is one of the most sold blends in Peru; describe the color and scent only, never “detox” or “limpia los poros”.
- Leche de Chupaca (milk): lard 50%, olive pomace 35%, coconut 12%, castor 3%, 7% superfat, with 2/3 raw Chupaca cow milk and 1/3 goat milk. Mild, with scent at 1% or none. A price ladder inside one line: Natural S/ 10, Quinoa S/ 12, scented bars S/ 15.
- Reserva Mantaro (premium): the same proven bases made special by the oval flower mold, all goat milk, true essential oils at 2–2.5%, a windowed kraft box and an origin card. S/ 22 retail, S/ 11 to Lima shops and hotel boutiques. Eucalipto Spa is the animal-free bar for eco-stores.
- Reserva Sol y Luna: the three Reserva recipes poured into sun-and-moon molds for a 55 g round bar. Sold as a set of three in a Reserva box (S/ 30), as an amenity for boutique hotels, and as wedding and event favors (S/ 12 single). The face is a widely sold design, so the farm story goes on the box, not the bar. If you mention Inti and Mama Killa, say the face is a modern design, not Andean art.
- Tasting box: six 25 g bars cut from the divided wood box (Chacra Natural, Lemongrass, Mint, Rosemary & Sage, Charcoal & Rosemary, and Leche de Chupaca Natural) in a small kraft box at S/ 22. It answers the sample boxes sold online and lets new buyers try the lines before choosing a full bar.
- Hotel guest bars: a 14 g mini for one-night stays and samples, and a 25 g bar for longer stays. Chacra base with a light lemongrass scent; the Leche de Chupaca base works too. Sold by the dozen, wrapped in a printed kraft band.
- Names and claims. “Suave” may still describe the feel on a band; do not write “para piel sensible”, “hipoalergénico” or “para bebés”. Write “sin ingredientes de origen animal” only on Eucalipto Spa, and only while every ingredient, colorant included, is plant or mineral.

Other oils and fats
| Oil or fat |
Where |
Price |
Use |
| Avocado oil (palta) |
Oliva Divina, S/ 160 per litre (your listing; version 4 read it as 4 L) |
S/ 160 / L |
Now optional only. It behaves like olive in soap and at this price adds S/ 1.25–1.60 a bar. Better kept for balms if at all. |
| Castor oil (ricino) |
Oliva Divina, S/ 55 per litre |
S/ 55 / L |
Still worth it: 3–5% boosts and stabilizes lather, about S/ 0.10–0.20 a bar. |
| Coconut oil, cosmetic or organic |
Oliva Divina |
S/ 60 / kg; organic S/ 80 / kg |
Use the cosmetic one; organic adds cost the bar cannot show. Refined coconut in bulk from Lima distributors (target S/ 30) is still the biggest cost lever. |
| Cacao butter |
Oliva Divina organic block, S/ 287.50 for 2.5 kg; Junín cooperatives (Satipo, Pangoa) may sell direct |
S/ 115 / kg |
Hardness and a creamy feel; the key to Reserva Cacao & Milk and Eucalipto Spa. |
| Mango butter |
Oliva Divina (Ecocert) |
S/ 115 / kg |
Can stand in for cacao butter at the same price, with no chocolate smell. No reason to switch unless cacao butter runs short. |
| Shea butter (karité) |
Oliva Divina (Ecocert) |
S/ 95 / kg |
Better in balms than in soap: much of it stays unsaponified and softens the bar. |
| Murumuru butter; babassu oil |
Oliva Divina |
S/ 190 / kg; S/ 110 / L |
Both behave like coconut (lauric) at two to three times the price. Leave them out of soap. |
| Cupuaçu butter (manteca de copoazú) |
Oliva Divina; this is the link your list gives for “manteca de cerdo pura” |
S/ 130 / kg |
A plant butter, not lard. Lard still comes from butchers at about S/ 10 per kg. |
| Beef tallow (sebo de res) |
Butchers in Chupaca and Huancayo; render like lard |
Estimate S/ 5–10 per kg |
Harder and creamier than lard; can replace up to half the lard in Chacra or Leche de Chupaca. Animal. |
| Sacha inchi oil |
Peruvian Amazon oil |
— |
Very high in omega-3: goes rancid fast and softens soap (orange spots). Keep it out of soap; small amounts in balms sold quickly. |
| Palm oil or vegetable shortening |
Cheap in markets |
— |
Set aside: Peruvian palm is linked to Amazon forest clearing in San Martín and Ucayali, which clashes with the farm's values. |
📦 Molds, cutters and bar sizes
The wood box mold
- Size it to the cutter. The cutter takes a loaf up to 33 cm long, 11 cm wide and 13 cm tall. Build each box with an inside of 33 × 8 cm and walls 7 cm high, and fill it to 5.5 cm. That is about 1.45 kg of batter, which is exactly one batch of 1 kg of oils. A 500 g test batch fills half the mold with a removable divider board at 16.5 cm.
- Fold-down sides. Base board with the two long walls hinged to it and the two end walls held between them by hook-and-eye latches or two clamps. To unmold, open the latches, fold the long walls down and lift the loaf on its liner. Use dry, untreated wood (eucalyptus from the woodshop or pine), 1.5–2 cm thick, and no varnish on the inside.
- The silicone liner. Cut one strip 22 × 33 cm that runs up one long wall, across the base and up the other (8 + 7 + 7 cm), plus two end pieces 10 × 9 cm with a 1 cm flap on each side tucked behind the strip. Pour at medium trace so nothing seeps through the end seams, and set the mold on a tray. Mark the liners “solo jabón”: once used with lye they never go back to the kitchen.
- How many. Four molds give four loaves a session, about 48 Leche de Chupaca bars or 60 Chacra bars. Check the roll's size when it arrives: a 40 × 100 cm roll lines about four molds.
- Heat. Wood holds heat, which helps lard and vegetable bars gel but can scorch milk and honey. Leave milk loaves uncovered in a cool room, and on warm days put the open mold in the refrigerator for the first 12 hours (a 33 cm mold fits a standard shelf).
The divided wood box for guest bars
- Build: the same 33 cm box with a fixed lengthwise divider, giving two channels 4 cm wide inside. Fill each to 3.3 cm. Line each channel with a 10.6 × 33 cm strip of the silicone mat (3.3 + 4 + 3.3 cm) and small end pieces.
- Batch: the two channels hold about 0.9 kg of batter, a 600 g-of-oils batch. Each channel goes through cutter 1 on its own: about 15 bars of 25 g each, 30 a pour, ends to the retazos bag.
- Wood: dry, untreated eucalyptus or pine, no varnish inside, the same fold-down sides as the big boxes.

- Two cutters, never restrung. Cutter 1 stays at 2 cm, cutter 2 at 1″. Keep spare 0.011″ plain steel guitar strings for both; Huancayo music shops sell them one by one.
- Trim and label: trim 1 cm off each end of every cut loaf (ends to retazos). Label Contenido neto: 80 g, 100 g, 25 g or 14 g.
- When to cut: lard and milk loaves at about 24 hours. If the wire drags or the bar crumbles, wait or cut sooner next time.
- Molded bars unmold slowly. Small cavities stay cool and do not gel. Leave milk bars 3–4 days and Eucalipto Spa 5–7 days before pushing them out, or put the filled mold in the freezer for 1–2 hours first. Push from the back and peel the silicone away from the flower; do not pull the bar.
- Keep the flower face clean: no buds, speckles or swirls in Reserva bars, and no stamp on the face. Stamp the flat back or the box.
- Leftover batter: pour whatever a loaf or tray cannot take into spare rectangle cavities or a mini tray. Nothing is wasted, and minis become stall samples.

- Per bar: about S/ 1,407.61 of equipment spread over 1,500 bars in the first year is about S/ 0.94 per bar, falling below S/ 0.30 over three years. The bar costs below do not include it.
🧪 Method
- Safety first: gloves, goggles, long sleeves, ventilation; children and animals out of the room. Never use aluminum pots, spoons or bowls: lye attacks aluminum and releases hydrogen gas. Use stainless steel (304) or heavy PP plastic marked #5. Keep vinegar for surfaces and plenty of water for skin.
- Lye into the liquid. Water or infusion (Chacra, scrub, hotel bars, Eucalipto Spa): sprinkle the lye into cold or partly frozen liquid, never the reverse, and let it cool to about 35 °C. Milk (Leche de Chupaca, Reserva milk bars): strain raw milk, freeze it in cubes, set the pot in an ice bath and add the lye a spoonful at a time over 12–15 minutes, keeping it below about 30 °C.
- Altitude: at 3,300 m water boils at about 89 °C and a water-lye solution can reach that, so always start cold and cover the jug while it cools, so the water does not evaporate and change the weights.
- Melt the fats: melt lard, cacao butter and coconut over low heat, then add the liquid oils. Cool to 35–40 °C (30–35 °C for milk). At 3,300 m rooms are cool, so oils may need gentle rewarming.
- Blend to trace with the stick blender fully submerged, in pulses. Lard and milk bars trace fast; Eucalipto Spa more slowly.
- Add at light trace: the scent paste (essential oils premixed overnight with kaolin), honey, quinoa flour and colorants. Stir by hand. Add pumice and coffee at medium trace so they do not sink.
- Pour: loaves at medium trace into the lined wood box; molds at light trace, so the batter fills every petal of the flower. Tap out air. Cover Chacra loaves loosely; leave milk loaves and filled molds open and cool.
- Unmold, cut and cure on wooden racks in a dark, airy room: Chacra, scrub and hotel bars about 4 weeks, milk bars 4–6 weeks, Eucalipto Spa 6–8 weeks. Dry season cures faster, rainy season slower: weigh test bars and sell only once the weight stops dropping.
Lot numbers and batch log: write a lot code on each loaf or mold batch (for example EMP-L-2611-01 = Leche de Chupaca, November 2026, batch 1; R for Reserva, C for Chacra, H for hotel bars) and log date, oil sources, liquid, lye weight, temperatures, cut and cure weights. Wholesale buyers, hotels and any registration will ask for it.
🌿 Scent plan and scent register
Eucalyptus, orange and peppermint are top notes: they evaporate fast, and soap warms itself as it saponifies, so a scent that is strong on pour day can fade during the cure. The fix is the same for every line: blend about 70% top note with 30% cedarwood as the base note, mix the whole blend with kaolin about 1:1 by weight in a closed jar overnight, stir the paste in at light trace with the batter at 30–35 °C, and cure cool and dark.
- Loads by line: Chacra and hotel bars about 1–1.2% of the oils (light and cheap), Leche de Chupaca 1% at most or none, Reserva and the scrub 2–2.5%.
- Fade test: keep one bar from every batch and score the scent from 0 to 5 at weeks 1, 3, 5 and 8. If it drops below 3 by week 5, raise the cedarwood share or the kaolin next time.

True chamomile oil is very costly; this is likely diluted or a fragrance. Your chamomile tea does more for the bar. |

Jasmine is an absolute, not a distilled oil, and costs far more: this is a fragrance. Florals can seize or brown soap; test 250 g first. |

Candles; maybe Reserva Cacao & Milk |
Test 0.5% |
A fragrance oil, probably vanillin-based: it browns soap, which suits only the cacao bar. |
- Costing: S/ 3.44 per US$ and the 22.7% courier taxes, to be safe. The new oils come to US$ 227.52, over the US$ 200 duty-free limit if they arrive as one shipment; if they arrive duty-free they are about 19% cheaper than shown. Volumes are the listed ones; grams use each oil's typical density.
- Genuine or not. Sandalwood, chamomile and jasmine at these prices cannot be the true oils, and vanilla, magnolia and chocolate are not essential oils at all. Before any of them goes into soap: smell it, rub a drop on paper (a carrier oil leaves a greasy ring), ask the seller for the safety data sheet and IFRA certificate, and make a 250 g test batch.
- Labels: a fragrance oil goes on the label as “Parfum (fragancia)”, not as “aceite esencial de …”. Only call an oil essential when the supplier documents it.
- Best value for soap: lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary, clary sage, orange, tangerine and bergamot (S/ 0.32–0.42 per gram). “Therapeutic grade” on the listings is marketing, and we make no aromatherapy claims.
🔬 The proposed formulations: what works and what does not
The proposed set kept four bases and adds Oliva Divina bioextracts at 2–3% to each bar. The bases are sound. The extracts are the problem, for three reasons.
- Lye undoes most of what an extract does in a cream. Fresh soap sits at pH 13 or higher. It destroys enzymes (papaya), neutralizes fruit acids (kiwi, grapefruit) and leaves the rest on the skin for the 30 seconds of a wash before it is rinsed off. The listed benefits are for leave-on creams and toners.
- Cost. At S/ 0.12–0.33 per ml, 4–5% of extracts adds S/ 0.50–0.80 to every bar. On a Chacra bar that is more than a quarter of its materials cost.
- Claims. Sunspots, eczema, rosacea, acne, “antibacterial”, “deodorizing”, “repairs the skin barrier”, “for babies” and “hypoallergenic” are therapeutic or banned claims under our rule and under DIGEMID.
- What the bioextracts are: Oliva Divina sells them for creams, tonics and gels. They are usually a plant extract in glycerin and water (sometimes propylene glycol) with a preservative. Ask for the INCI list and data sheet before buying any. In soap they count as part of the liquid. Their real home is water-based leave-on products, which need a preservative system, a lab and an NSO; that is outside this plan for now.
- Rosemary for rancidity: the antioxidant that slows orange spots is rosemary oleoresin (ROE, an oil-soluble CO2 extract used at 0.05–0.1% of the oils), not a water and glycerin bioextract. Ask Oliva Divina which one theirs is. Until then, vitamin E at 0.1–0.2% of the oils does the job, and it is in the balm plan already.

What we keep |
Problem and extract cost per bar |
Decision |
| Chacra “Romero y Salvia Protector”: Chacra base + 2% sage + 2% rosemary bioextract |
The base; rosemary and sage as the idea |
+S/ 0.51 a bar on a S/ 5 bar that costs S/ 1.90. “Sanitizes”, “controls sweat” and “neutralizes odor” are claims. The rosemary bioextract is not the antioxidant that stops rancidity (see below). |
Made as Chacra Rosemary & Sage: a market-herb infusion as the water and the rosemary oil you bought (S/ 2.28 a bar). |
| Suave “Cica-Miel”: Suave base + 3% centella + 2% chamomile bioextract + honey |
The base and the honey (about 20 g per kg, as in Quinoa, Milk & Honey) |
+S/ 0.63 a bar. Windburn, rosacea, “repairs micro-tears” and “calms hypersensitivity” are therapeutic claims. |
Not added: Quinoa, Milk & Honey already fills this place. If you want one premium extract bar to test, this is the one, at about S/ 18. |
| Vegetal “Resplandor de Cacao y Regaliz”: Vegetal base + 2% licorice + 2% kiwi bioextract, kaolin, orange or bergamot |
The base, the kaolin swirl and the citrus scent |
+S/ 0.78 a bar. Lye neutralizes the kiwi fruit acids at once, and “fades sunspots” is a drug claim. |
Kept the kaolin and citrus idea for a later Reserva bar (Bergamot & White Clay, about S/ 5 a 100 g bar before the box); not in the v6 line-up. |
| Leche de Chupaca “Leche y Quinua Exfoliante Enzimático”: milk base + 2% quinoa + 2% papaya bioextract |
The quinoa idea (the sunflower milk base is retired in v6) |
+S/ 0.56 a bar. Lye destroys the papaya enzyme, so there is no “enzymatic” anything. Letting milk sugars “caramelize the bar golden” means scorched milk, which smells of ammonia. |
Made as Quinoa, Milk & Honey with ground rolled quinoa (S/ 2.43 a bar). |
Rolled quinoa instead of oats
- Yes. Rolled quinoa (about S/ 15 per kg) works like oat flour: a gentle texture and a creamy feel, with a better Junín story than oats. Market quinoa is already washed of its bitter saponins.
- Grind it. Blend the flakes to a fine flour and sieve: whole flakes feel scratchy and go soggy at the surface. Use about 30 g per kg of oils, whisked into a little warm oil and added at light trace. For a scrub bar, keep some coarser pieces but stay under 50 g per kg.
- Where it goes: Quinoa, Milk & Honey in the Leche de Chupaca line, replacing Oatmeal & Honey.
The altitude note
- Cover the lye solution while it cools: yes, at 3,300 m water evaporates faster and the weights drift.
- Also: water boils at about 89 °C here, and lye dissolving in water can reach that. Add the lye to cold or partly frozen water for every base, not only the milk bars, so it never boils and spits.
- “Below 45 °C for the extracts”: harmless, but it does not save the enzymes; the lye does the damage.
Companion balms (for the balm plan)
One rule covers all four: water-and-glycerin extracts do not mix into a water-free balm. They separate, and the water they bring lets mold grow unless the balm is made as a preserved emulsion. To give a balm a plant story, use an oil maceration (calendula, chamomile, lavender), as the balm plan already does.

Problem |
Decision |
| Bálsamo del Campo: lard 60%, sunflower 35%, beeswax 5% + rosemary bioextract |
With 5% wax it is a greasy ointment that melts in a pocket; lard and sunflower in a leave-on product go rancid and smell within months. |
Drop. The Farmer's hand salve already does this job. |
| Alivio Andino face and lip balm: avocado 40%, olive 35%, beeswax 20%, shea 5% + extracts |
A fair soft salve, but too soft for a lip tube (lip balm needs about 30% wax); 40% avocado at S/ 160 per litre is costly. |
Not now. The lip balm in the balm plan covers lips; a face balm can come later. |
| Bálsamo Vegano Iluminador: avocado 50%, cacao 30%, candelilla 20% + licorice |
20% candelilla is about as hard as 40% beeswax: a stick, not a balm. Candle soy wax is not cosmetic grade. “Fades dark spots” is a drug claim. |
Drop. The balm plan's animal-free versions (candelilla at about half the beeswax weight) cover this. |
| Nutrición de Quinua lotion bar: sunflower 50%, lard 25%, beeswax 25% + quinoa extract |
Softer than a lotion bar should be, and the same rancidity and smell problem as the field balm. |
Keep the current lotion bar (beeswax, cacao butter and coconut in equal parts). |
Also for balms: no bergamot (it can stain skin in the sun), no clove or cassia, and peppermint at 0.5% or less on lips.
📋 Recipe cards
Every bar uses the method above. Weights are for a 500 g test batch and for a full 1 kg batch. Make one test batch of each bar before scaling, and recheck the lye in a calculator.

- Use cosmetic activated charcoal (bamboo or coconut shell). Barbecue or kitchen charcoal is not clean enough for skin.
- Charcoal is very fine and drifts: mix it into oil before it goes near the batter, and wear a mask while measuring. The lather is grey and rinses clean; a thin swirl of plain batter on top gives a two-tone bar.
- Describe the color and scent only: no “detox”, “purifica”, “limpia los poros” or “antiacné”.

- Keep the face plain: no speckles, buds or swirls. Pale milk bars show the face best. Weigh cured bars before printing the net weight.

Hotel guest bars · 14 g and 25 g
Use the Chacra Lemongrass recipe (or Chacra Natural for unscented requests). The Leche de Chupaca recipe works too, at a slightly higher cost.

Yield |
| 25 g |
600 g of oils (60% of the 1 kg card: 420 g lard, 150 g coconut, 30 g castor, 86 g NaOH, 186 g water, scent and kaolin at 60%) |
Divided wood box, two channels through cutter 1: ≈ 30 bars |
| 14 g |
250 g of oils per tray (25% of the 1 kg card), or leftover batter |
One mini tray: 24 bars |
Tasting box · S/ 22
Six 25 g bars from the divided wood box: Chacra Natural, Chacra Lemongrass, Chacra Mint, Chacra Rosemary & Sage, Chacra Charcoal & Rosemary and Leche de Chupaca Natural, each with its own printed band, in a small kraft box with a card naming the lines and their full-bar prices. Make the 25 g bars whenever a loaf of that recipe runs: a 600 g batch of one recipe gives about 30, enough for five boxes.
- Wrap each bar in a printed kraft band: name, ingredients, net weight, lot and, for hotels, the NSO code.
- Until a hotel orders regularly, quarter 100 g bars for samples.

Clays from the valley and the Andes
- Aco pottery clay. Aco, in Concepción province, is a potters' village in the Mantaro Valley. Its clay is the most local option and a strong story, but potters' clay is not cosmetic grade: it can carry sand, microbes and metals.
- Chaco (pasa). An edible clay from altiplano deposits, rich in smectites, eaten with potatoes and sold in Andean markets. Edible use does not make it cosmetic grade; it needs the same testing.
- Before any local clay goes on skin: (1) collect a 1–2 kg sample; (2) send it to an accredited laboratory for heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury) and microbiology, because the Mantaro watershed has a long mining and smelting history (La Oroya is upstream); (3) if it passes, soak it, let the sand settle and pour off the fine clay, dry it, bake it at about 120 °C for an hour and sieve it; (4) include the test results in the product file for the notification.
- A better tie-in right away: buy soap dishes and candle saucers from Aco potters and sell them with the bars. It supports valley craft and needs no testing.
- How much: 1–2% of the oils (10–20 g per kg), premixed with the essential oils or a little water. Clay absorbs water and speeds trace.
🎨 Peruvian natural colors
Cold-process soap is strongly alkaline while it saponifies, and many plant colors change or die in it. Green rows are reliable, yellow rows need a test batch, red rows do not work in soap.

- Infuse rather than dump powders. Oil infusions (achiote, paprika, alfalfa) give even color without specks that can feel gritty or stain a washcloth.
- Label every colorant in the ingredient list (for example “achiote (Bixa orellana)”, “carmín”).
- Candles are different: see the candle plan (v2). Powders do not belong inside candles.

- Leche de Chupaca costs S/ 2.38–2.75 a bar and earns 4–6× at S/ 10–15, and about 2.4–3× at half price wholesale. Cow milk instead of all-goat saves about S/ 0.06 a bar.
- Reserva Mantaro costs S/ 4.14–5.95 with the box. At S/ 22 the milk bars earn about 5× and hold 2.5–2.8× to shops at S/ 11. Eucalipto Spa, the animal-free bar, is the thinnest at about 2× wholesale; sell it mostly at retail and in sets. The box price is the biggest unknown: get quotes.
- Reserva Sol y Luna costs S/ 1.93–2.91 with a paper sleeve (about S/ 0.50, estimate). At S/ 12 that is 4–6×; a set of three at S/ 30 in a Reserva box (about S/ 1.50) still earns 4× or more. Sell to boutique hotels at about S/ 6 a bar (50%).
- Hotel bars cost S/ 0.38–0.70 with the band. At S/ 1.20 for a mini and S/ 2.20 for a 25 g bar, about 3× now and nearly 4× with refined coconut.
- Tasting box: about S/ 5.55 for six 25 g bars, their bands and a S/ 1.50 box (estimate). At S/ 22 it earns about 4×, and about 2× to shops at S/ 11.
- Chacra at S/ 5: S/ 1.90–2.30 a bar, about 2.2–2.6× its materials. Wholesale it at S/ 3.50 only once refined coconut is in. The scrub, now molded, needs no trimming and costs S/ 2.97.
- Retazos: trimmed ends from any cut loaf, bagged at about 200 g for S/ 4. A low-price item that wastes nothing.

🌳 Our eucalyptus trees and agave plants
Eucalyptus trees
- Leaf infusion (already in the recipes). Eucalipto Spa uses about 80 g of fresh leaves per 1 kg-of-oils loaf. It is free and the trees will not miss it.
- Our own eucalyptus oil and hydrosol. The small still planned for lavender can also distill eucalyptus leaves. The yield is unknown, so run a trial with 1–2 kg of fresh leaves before counting on it. With eucalyptus oil now at about S/ 0.34 per gram imported, the saving is small; the lavender oil and the hydrosol are what pay for the still.
- Wood. Seasoned, untreated eucalyptus poles already carry the tomato trellis. The same wood can make the fold-down soap mold boxes, curing racks and display trays; eucalyptus can warp and split, so dry it well and keep the silicone liner between wood and soap.
- Dried leaf sachets next to the lavender sachets, sold as scent, with no claims.
- Caution. Eucalyptus leaf litter is reported to inhibit seedlings. Compost leaves well before they go near the vegetable cells, and use fresh leaves only for infusions.
Agave belt
- Identify them first. Blue-grey “penca azul” is Agave americana; “cabuya” is also used for Furcraea. These plants grow slowly, flower once after decades and then die, so the belt is not a crop to strip.
- Fiber (cabuya, pita): the best use. Cut only a few outer mature leaves per plant a year, scrape or ret them to free the fibers, wash and sun-dry. Uses: twine for the tomato trellis and the soap bands in place of jute, and rough scrub mitts, soap-saver bags and bar rests sold with the Farmer & Gardener Scrub.
- Sap and saponins: keep it out of the soap. The leaves hold saponins and irritants, and workers who process agave and cabuya fiber are documented to get skin problems. Do not add agave sap or juice to a skin soap. Wear gloves and long sleeves when cutting.
- Not now. Tapping the heart for aguamiel or syrup kills the plant, and a food product would need its own registration. The belt stays as a living fence and windbreak.
⚖️ Rules, permits and formalization
This summarizes public information and is not legal advice. Confirm current requirements with DIGEMID or DIRESA Junín and SUNAT before scaling.
- Soap is regulated as a sanitary product. Bar soap needs a Notificación Sanitaria Obligatoria (NSO) from DIGEMID, filed through VUCE, and local manufacture is expected in a DIGEMID-authorized laboratory. There is no lighter category for artisan soap.
- In practice: shops, hotels and Lima ecological stores that buy wholesale will ask for the NSO number. Paths: contract manufacturing with an authorized laboratory that holds the NSO, or authorizing your own space later. Many artisan makers start with small market sales, but the decision and the risk are yours.
- One notification per formula? Ask DIGEMID or the contract laboratory whether bars that share a base and differ only in scent or color can share an NSO. With five bases, that could mean five files instead of nineteen. Register the bases that hotels and Lima shops need first: Chacra (hotel bars), milk and animal-free (Reserva).
- Sodium hydroxide is a controlled chemical (IQBF). The law exempts retail sales for domestic and artisan use within limits set by regulation. Buy from a legitimate distributor, keep receipts and ask SUNAT whether your annual volume needs registration.
- Claims. “Calms”, “heals”, “detoxifies”, “clears the chest”, “for sensitive skin”, “hypoallergenic” and “for babies” are all claims, and so are “fades spots”, “anti-acne”, “antibacterial”, “deodorizing”, “for eczema or rosacea” and “repairs the skin”, the kind of benefit bioextract listings use. Describe the ingredients and the feel only.
- Labels: every ingredient (including milk, honey, oats, purees and colorants), fragrance oils as “Parfum (fragancia)”, net weight, lot number, maker and contact and, once registered, the NSO code. The scrub says “no usar en el rostro”, the mint bar “evite el contacto con los ojos”. Eucalipto Spa says “sin ingredientes de origen animal” only when true for every ingredient.
- Tax: a RUC and boletas or facturas for wholesale accounts.
🏪 Marketing and sales
Packaging by line
- Chacra: a plain kraft paper band with a rubber stamp, no twine or sprig, so the price stays at S/ 5.
- Leche de Chupaca: a 4 cm kraft band, one strand of cabuya twine and a sprig of the farm's dried lavender.
- Reserva Mantaro: a windowed kraft box that shows the flower, a printed origin card (Toccha Comun II, Chupaca milk, Junín cacao butter), and the lot on the back. Eucalipto Spa's box carries “sin ingredientes de origen animal”.
- Reserva Sol y Luna: a kraft paper sleeve that wraps the edge and leaves the face showing; sets of three in a Reserva box with the origin card.
- Hotel bars: a printed kraft band around each bar, packed by the dozen in a kraft carton.
- Scrub: sold with a cabuya bar rest or an Aco ceramic soap dish as a set.
Label text (Spanish)
- Front: Earth Matter Peru, the bar name and the line: Línea Chacra, Leche de Chupaca or Reserva Mantaro. Tagline: Cultivado en Orcotuna, hecho a mano en Chupaca.
- Back: ingredient list (fragrance oils as “Parfum (fragancia)”), lot, contact, net weight (Contenido neto: 80 g, 100 g, 25 g or 14 g).
Where each line sells
- Chupaca Saturday fair: Chacra (S/ 5, 3 for S/ 13), the scrub, retazos and Leche de Chupaca; a few Reserva boxes for gifts.
- Huancayo Sunday feria and Bioferia de El Tambo: Leche de Chupaca and Reserva; soap + candle sets.
- Hotels, hostales and cafés: guest bars by the dozen; Sol y Luna bars as amenities in boutique hotels; Reserva boxes for hotel boutiques and reception gifts.
- Lima bio-ferias and ecological stores: Reserva first, led by Eucalipto Spa for animal-free buyers.
- Sets: soap + candle, soap + balm, soap + Aco soap dish, the six-bar tasting box (S/ 22) and the Sol y Luna trio, for December and Mother's Day; Sol y Luna favors for weddings and events.

Chacra sits between Dove and Heno de Pravia per gram while being hand made from local fat. Leche de Chupaca at S/ 10–15 sits level with Natura's Ekos bars (S/ 10.75–12.75 a 100 g bar in a box of four), so it competes on handmade, local milk and freshness rather than price, and the 14 g minis make that case as samples. Reserva at S/ 22 is about twice Natura per bar, so it must look and feel like a gift: the flower mold, the box and the origin card. Ekos has a strong story of its own (Amazon ingredients, guardian families, vegan), so ours has to be just as clear: grown in Orcotuna, Chupaca milk, made by hand. EsaCare, a Lima online brand, sells 120 g bars in 13 blends at S/ 12.70–17.90 and 50 g bars in gift boxes of 6 or 12 at about S/ 7.10 each; its pages list few ingredients, show no NSO, and make claims we will not (“protector solar natural”, dermatitis). Sol y Luna at S/ 12 for 55 g is well above its 50 g kit bars, so it has to sell as a gift piece, not a sampler. NUA sells six 80 g glycerin-base bars with Amazon ingredients (aguaje, copaiba, sangre de grado) at S/ 20, or S/ 25 per 100 g, with no packs and the badge “100% Natural y Orgánico”; Reserva at S/ 22 per 100 g, cold process with real oils and milk, sits just below it. Erabambú, made in Satipo, Junín, and sold in Lima by Bamboo Balance, is dearer still: nine glycerin-base blends at S/ 25 for 85 g (S/ 29.41 per 100 g) or S/ 67 for a tripack, with claims such as UV protection and collagen that we will not make. It shows that a Junín-made bar can sell at a Lima premium. Bamboo Balance also sells a handmade Lima ceramic soap dish at S/ 59, a useful price point for the Aco soap dish sets. The closest competitor in method is Misha Rastrera, a fair-trade brand from Cañete: true cold-process bars of olive and coconut oil, cured a month, in 12 blends (goat milk, rosemary, eucalyptus, cacao, coca, chamomile and more) at S/ 13 for 90 g (S/ 14.44 per 100 g), sold at Lima eco-fairs and eco-stores. That price is the ceiling to watch for Leche de Chupaca in Lima; Reserva has to justify its premium with the milk, the mold and the box. Its 19 gift packs (S/ 25–68) hold oils, hydrosols, balms, shampoo bars and tea but no soap bars, with Mother's Day wrap and card: a soap + balm + tea set from the farm would fit that price band. On the Falabella marketplace, generic bars show inflated “regular” prices with 50–78% discounts (rice or alum bars at S/ 9.90 for 110 g): do not copy that; keep one honest price. A laundry bar was considered and set aside: Bolívar sells 190 g for about S/ 3.30, below what we could make it for.
